What is Carbon Filtration?

 

Carbon filters are intended to remove chemicals, odors and bad taste. Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal or activated coal is the primary filtering element because is it very porous giving it a large surface area used for chemical absorption. It is referred to as Active because of its extremely large surface area; 1 gram of activated carbon is roughly equal to one tenth of a football field. Granular Activated Carbon is intended to be used in water treatment, and deodorization which is deal for an in-line filter component on a water cooler. Since city water is treated which chlorine and other chemicals to remove bacteria, the water often is left with a bad odor or chlorinated taste. Carbon filters are usually used as a secondary filter in a 2 stage or 3 stage filtration system. It is recommended to change the carbon filter cartridge every six months.
