What is RO – Reverse Osmosis – Filtration? |
|
The purpose of Reverse Osmosis filtration is to remove dissolved contaminants. Basically, high pressure water is forced through a semipermeable membrane. Clean, filtered water is then used and the remaining contaminated water, brine, is discharged. This process can remove up to 95% of dissolved particles and minerals from water depending on the pressure and temperature of the water which makes RO filtration approximately 0.0001 microns. Because this type of filtration is intended to remove the smallest particles, it is used as a third filter after sediment and carbon filters have already removed the larger particles. If this filter was used by itself, the larger particles would plug the membrane immediately. Check here for a list of contaminants that a Reverse Osmosis filter removes.
