What is Sediment Filtration? |
|
Sediment Filters are intended to remove sediment particles as small as 5-microns, such as sand or rust. Because sediment filters remove particles, it is generally used as a pre-filter or as the first filter in a multiple stage filtration system in which other filters remove smaller particles, and chemicals. There are different types of sediment filters, but typical water cooler sediment filters are Spun Polypropylene, also referred to as Polyspun, or Spun-Bonded Polypropylene. This type of filter is very thick and has a higher holding capacity for contaminants because it contains multiple filtering layers. Other sediment filter types are called Pleated Polyprolene and String Wound but they are generally used with water coolers. Some water cooler manufacturers combine carbon and sediment filter elements into a single filter creating a finer filter. Usually, these filters are intended to be used as secondary or tertiary filter and are intended to continue to filter sediment, chlorine and odors. Sediment filter cartridges should be replaced approximately every six months.
A micron is a metric unit of length equal to one millionth of a meter. To give some perspective on how small a micron is, a human hair is approximately 25 microns in diameter.
