These themes are based on the social, political, and economic climate of the period. Typically, a theme can be nostalgic or realistic. In some cases, the theme is a wake-up call. Other times, the theme may be a way to educate the audience.
Movies were originally purely visual art until the 1920s. The earliest movies showed people walking in the street. After this time, the earliest films began to string several scenes together to tell a story. Many of these films featured a rich socialite or an unemployed artist.
The first few decades of the twentieth century were filled with movies featuring emotional optimism. Many of these movies contained humorous mishaps. During World War II, many films were made to send a message of propaganda. Those films were often accompanied by full orchestras and complete film scores.
In the mid-1960s, society underwent a dramatic change. Many factors were involved, including the Second Red Scare, the Hollywood Blacklist, and the Cold War. These changes forced the economy to adjust. Social norms also changed dramatically. This allowed for more candid and explicit depictions of adult matters.
In the late 1960s, women began to take control of the movie industry. In addition, the role of men in the industry changed. Women no longer needed male support. Moreover, women no longer had the defenseless role.
By the end of the 1960s, many movies were influenced by the new “second wave” of feminism. In these films, women were more controlling in their roles. As a result, a more realistic and realistic style of acting was adopted.
In the 1970s, themes were becoming more complex. The movie industry was beginning to compete more competitively. People wanted more in a movie than they had before. To achieve this goal, movie producers were taking risks. Some were trying to bring families back together, while others were making them to educate the audience.
Themes become more common as society becomes more complicated. Themes can be a message, or an escapist, or a mixture of both. Most of the time, these themes are regulated by the director’s imagination.
If the theme is unrealistic, it might not be able to achieve its intended effect. On the other hand, if the theme is realistic, it could be a very powerful message. For example, a movie with the theme of not trusting anybody might be a wake-up call. However, this could have been done in a very thin way.
Themes are very important and cannot be overemphasized. But, how does one figure out what is the best theme for a movie?
